Unfinished

I’m putting this out mostly for my own good. I have a number of half-written songs stagnating because I feel compelled to “finish” something before I move on to something else. The following songs are done enough.

Unfinished 1 (download)
Running Time: 6:02
Approximate date of recording: 23 August 2009 / November 2009
Notes: Guitar parts came first, as they always do. This is the first song on which my own drum kit was used. Bass came last, as it always does.

Unfinished 2 (download)
Running Time: 5:15
Approximate date of recording: 11 January 2010
Notes: My most recent abomination. Wrote it after listening to a lot of Pelican.

Unfinished 3 (download)
Running Time: 5:12
Date of recording: 25 June 2010; 2 August 2010
Notes: One of a few songs I wrote just before bar studying took away all my free time. Guitar was recorded then; drums and bass were recorded tonight (2 August). No particular inspiration on this one. It was written directly after a much more energetic piece, so maybe I was tired? Also, this one sets a new (tuning) low for my work: drop A#!

Unfinished 4 (download)
Running Time: 4:21
Date of recording: 13 August 2010
Notes: This is the more energetic piece mentioned above. I wrote the main riff immediately before writing “Unfinished 3.” Everything else was written, and the entire song recorded, late on 13 August/early on 14 August. I put more effort into the production than usual on this one, having finally sorted out how to use some of Record’s more useful features. Not sure if it’s noticeable. Still in drop A#. Guitar lead is weak; this is semi-intentional.

Unfinished 5 (download)
Running Time: 3:23
Dates of recording: 24 May 2010 / 11 June 2011
Notes: Written and recorded last May. I held it back because I wasn’t happy with my drumming on it. Normal people would not take over a year to re-record a three minute drum track, of course. The delay is also partly attributable to the sad fact that I had to leave my bass in Chicago and can’t really justify either getting it shipped or getting a new one. I only recently decided that I could not justify this, at which point there was no reason to keep waiting on banging out a drum track and releasing the song (aside from the fact that it is garbage). It’s been over a year, so I’m fuzzy on the details, but I think this is also in drop A#. Rest assured that my guitar is not currently tuned that low, and I am far too lazy ever to tune it that low again. If I ever get around to writing and recording something else, it’ll be more standard.
